The Installation Process
Surface preparation is shot blasting or diamond grinding the concrete to an ICRI CSP 3 to CSP 5 profile. Cracks are filled with rigid epoxy filler. Primer is applied. Base coat follows. Decorative layer (flake, color flake, metallic) if specified. Topcoat. Cure. We do not use acid etching as a sole preparation method for coatings we warranty. Etching leaves residue and does not create sufficient mechanical profile for long-term adhesion.
The grinding step is where a lot of Lafayette garage jobs get shortchanged. A cheap crew will run a light pass with a hand grinder, knock the sheen off the concrete, and call it prep. That gives you a CSP 1 at best, and a coating laid over that profile has nothing to grab. Then, after cure, we scrape the loose flake, vacuum it, and lay two coats of clear polyaspartic over the top so the texture is locked in and the floor is smooth enough to sweep. A partial broadcast looks fine on install day and shows every worn spot two years later. Doing it to refusal is more material and more labor, and it is the difference between a floor that reads as a professional finish and one that reads as a weekend kit.
