The line is mechanical prep. Acid etching, the box-kit standard, does not open concrete the way diamond grinding does, and rental grinders with worn segments burnish more than they cut. If a coating is going down, the grind is where the bond lives, and it is the step worth paying a crew for. The same goes for moisture testing: the reading that decides the primer takes calibrated equipment and interpretation, not a taped square of plastic.

Crack repair sits in the middle: hairlines can wait for the crew, but if you want to tackle wider cracks yourself, use a rigid epoxy or polyurea repair material rather than concrete patch, and overfill slightly for the grind to level. Skip the flexible caulks, coatings cannot bond over them and we end up cutting them out.

Where DIY prep genuinely pays is cleanout, degreasing, and scraping, the unskilled hours that make every quote cheaper.
